How To Get Through TSA With Diabetes Devices

With the right tips, you can ensure that you have all the diabetic devices you need for your next airline trip.

As you know, the TSA can have some rather stringent set of rules when it comes to everything from carry-on bags to bottled water. That includes medical devices for those with chronic diseases such as diabetes.

If you plan on flying with diabetic devices, then you will want to know how you can get through TSA without any delays or difficulty. Here is how you can get these five essential diabetic devices through TSA Security:

1). Insulin Pump or Continuous Glucose Monitor

You are allowed to walk through a metal detector with an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor of CGM. Be sure to have an airport information card or TSA Disability Notification Card that you can provide for the TSA officer on duty. Inform the officer that you are not able to remove the item from your person.

Also, do not send an insulin pump or CGM through an X-ray machine. This will damage both devices.

2). Insulin Delivery Devices

Visit your physician about two weeks before you travel so you can get a written note informing security about your insulin delivery devices including your needs. Also, make sure that your insulin and glucose meter have their pharmaceutical information label on the device.

3). Insulin

Do not store your insulin in your luggage. The drastic change in temperature and air pressure could negatively affect the medication. Instead, you will want to carry on your insulin. Medication is exempt from the 3.4-ounce limitation rule. Also, any freezing or cooling equipment needed for the insulin is also permitted on board.

4). Lancets

You can carry your lancets aboard with your carry-on luggage as long as the lancets are capped and the manufacturer’s name is printed on the devices. If you have any difficulty getting your devices past security, be sure to request to speak with the TSA Ground Force Commissioner.

5). Glucagon

You are able to bring glucagon abroad with your carry-on luggage as well. Just make sure that the glucagon is stored in a pharmaceutical-labeled container.

Bonus Tip:

Bring diabetic-friendly food

In addition to your diabetic equipment, be sure to bring diabetic-friendly food. You may not be able to find suitable dining options at the airport or while you are onboard. Diabetic-friendly food and snacks include berries, nuts, whole grains, and green, leafy vegetables.
